DJ Flash Gordon Parks: A music historian of sorts...
To date this was one of the most enjoyable interviews I’ve done. DJ Flash Gordon Parks reeks of nostalga, a true representation of Modern Renaissance! Known for his soulful artist battles and mix sets which sometimes come in 3 and 4 part series, Flash is somewhat of a music historian turned DJ. With a damenor as cool as the other side of the pillow Flash took part in a Q & A as I asked questions and definitely learned quite a bit on music in general. Flash also shared his continuous journey of creative culture which can be heard through his gift on the 1’s and 2’s.
MR: You are a house hold name in the H Town hip hop circles, but for those on the west and east coast that may not be familiar introduce yourself.
DJ FGP:Originally from Houston’s South Side, 3rd ward to be exact, I graduated from Yates high school home of so many influential figures such as Santana Dotson, Phylicia Rashad, and Debbie Allen. I’m a lover of music and all things creative.
MR: When did you start DJing?
DJ FGP:I started to collect records first, I’ve always had a love for music! I really began to DJ in college at Sam Houston St. I had such a great collection of records it just pushed me to want to share this wonderful music and it just took off from there.
MR: I have heard a number of your sets and its clear that you are a hip hop head but past that a music junkie in general. Who are some of the guys who came before you that inspired you to DJ and also inspired your style?
DJ FGP:Jan Master Jay, DJ Screw, Afrika Bambaataa, Chicken George, Kool Herc, DJ Sun and DJ Melodic to name a few. I always thought what Bambaadaa did was amazing, from that i wanted to take this art that was so street and take that to other places as he did.
MR: What are some of the bigger events that you have DJ’ed in recent years?
DJ FGP: I’ve done quite a bit but the ones that stick out most are Project Row House & Blackouts Art Collective.
#SIGHT X "The Mind Of Andy Dufrense" Album Art Work
The mid March anticipated beat tape by Houston producer QuickSaand art work has been released! The track list is soon to follow, we were blessed to get a copy of the project a few weeks early. The official release will be at South By Southwest (SXSW) March 15th. No different then his production on the Houston St. 2 Houston project Quick shows his versatility with soulful samples, jazz influenced compositions as well as a few tracks that are totally against the grain.
